DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) is the next generation media for storage of huge amounts of data. A Single Sided DVD can contain more than 4 GigaBytes of data. By contrast, a CD-ROM can hold about 650 MegaBytes. A MegaByte is 1,000 x 1,000 characters of data. A GigaByte is 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 characters of data.

Because of its huge storage capacity, a DVD can contain video of much higher quality than any other consumer video medium. The video quality of a DVD is 2 -7 times greater than VHS video tape.

DVDs come in several varieties. The best known is the mechanically produced DVD movie which is made in a mastering plant in very large quantities for commercial distribution of movies. Recent technical developments have made possible the DVD-R. This is a DVD which can be cost effectively created in smaller quantities while still retaining the vast capacity and high quality video of the DVD used by Hollywood for its movies. All this and the DVD-R will play beautifully in most modern set-top DVD players as well as literally all computer DVD players.
